Kaur J, et al. BMJ Case Rep 2017. doi:10.1136/bcr-2017-221251 Description Dengue is an arboviral disease transmitted by Aedes sp. mosquitoes. A wide spectrum of illness is observed, ranging from dengue fever to dengue shock syndrome. The common neurological complications noted are encephalitis and encephalopathy. Haemorrhagic complications due to thrombocytopenia can result in various neurological sequelae. We report a case of dengue fever with spontaneous spinal hematoma presenting as cauda equina syndrome. A 47-year-old man presented with moderate grade fever and arthralgia for 5 days. On day 6 of illness, he got admitted with complaints of lower backache, urinary retention, bilateral lower limb weakness and numbness below ankle. This was followed by reduced perianal sensations. On clinical examination, the patient was found to have MRC grade 4/5 power in extensor hallucis longus and ankle plantar flexors. The ankle reflexes were absent bilaterally with other deep tendon reflexes

Case Report A rare etiology of cauda equina syndrome
Fungal infections of the spine are very rare and usually seen in immunocompromised patients. Acute cauda equina syndrome presenting in an immunocompetent patient is usually due to a prolapse of the intervertebral disc. Infective pathology caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis with epidural collection can also have a similar presentation. We present a case of spinal epidural abscess caused by Asp...

INTRODUCTION Medulloblastoma is one of the most common pediatric brain malignancies. The usual presenting clinical features are related to posterior fossa syndrome or/and hydrocephalus. Cauda equina syndrome is a very rare presentation for this disease. CASE PRESENTATION We describe the case of a three-year-old boy with cauda equina syndrome as the initial presenting clinical feature for medu...
متن کاملHemi-cauda equina syndrome from herniated lumbar disc: a neurosurgical emergency?
BACKGROUND We report experience with patients presenting with a specific combination of symptoms: unilateral sciatica, unilateral sensibility loss in the dermatomes S1 to S5 (hemi-saddle) and subjective micturation problems secondary to ruptured lumbar disc. Because of its similarities with a cauda equina syndrome, this combination of symptoms was thought to be a unilateral cauda equina syndrom...
متن کاملIntramedullary Abscess by Staphylococcus aureus Presenting as Cauda Equina Syndrome to the Emergency Department
Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a rare entity presenting with low back pain, unilateral or bilateral sciatica, motor weakness of lower extremities, sensory disturbance in the perineal area, and urinary and/or faecal incontinence. Those symptoms are secondary to compression of the cauda equina. If not recognized, CES can lead to irreversible disabilities. We report the case of a 77-year-old lady ...
متن کاملAcute-on-chronic type B aortic dissection presenting as cauda equina syndrome
A 60-year-old woman transferred with suspected cauda equina syndrome lacked lower extremity pulses on arrival. She rapidly developed visceral malperfusion due to underlying type B aortic dissection, necessitating aortic fenestration with thrombectomy. Despite misdiagnosis and delayed treatment, she could ambulate 1 year postoperatively. Aortic dissection remains integral to the differential dia...
